Northern Oakland County

Northern Oakland County is accessed by Interstate 75, which provides a primary commuter route to the employment centers of central and southern Oakland County. The Clarkston, Oxford and Lake Orion areas have evolved from their rural agricultural and resort area heritages to residential population centers. While each community is distinct and has its own character, a common feature is that each has a sense true sense of community anchored by a traditional downtown area. Each downtown area offers retail convenience shopping and a variety of dining experiences.

Clarkston (and surrounding Independence Township) is the home of the DTE Music Theatre, which features major headline entertainment in an outdoor setting. Formerly known as Pine Knob, the complex also offers winter skiing and a championship 27 hole golf course surrounded by upscale residences.

Lake Orion is one of the largest all-sports inland lakes in the County and is known for its outstanding recreational opportunities. This area was originally developed as a northern resort community for Detroit city residences during the early 1900's and was dotted with seasonal cottages. Most of those dwellings have been replaced by permanent year-round homes now, but the motto for the area remains, "Lake Orion — Where Living is a Vacation."

Oxford Township is dotted with dozens of smaller inland lakes, which were created as a result of extensive aggregate mining operations during the middle of the last century. The resulting landscape now features rolling terrain with tremendous water features, making the area ripe for residential and recreational development. Waterstone is a newer planned unit development located just north of the Village of Oxford. It includes some 3,000 residential and condominium sites, a very scenic 27 hole championship golf course known as Boulder Pointe, a senior citizen assisted living facility and retail support centers.
